POTTERY CLASSES
I teach how to throw on the potter’s wheel, hand building techniques and glaze technology from my studio situated in my garden near Mildenhall, Suffolk. I focus mainly on 1:1 tuition but can accommodate two students at any one time. For groups larger than 2, I enlist the help of fellow potter(s), so need adequate notice for this.
My hours of teaching are from Monday to Friday 10.00 to 5.00 pm. All materials and tools are supplied and firing is included in the price Should students not like the glazes I have available an extra cost will be incurred to make a fresh batch of glaze using raw materials that I have.
Payment for teaching is payable in advance by bank transfer or by purchasing a voucher from my shop. As I have to spend time preparing for these courses, the fee is non-refundable but you can alter the date if this becomes necessary.

POTTERY EXPERIENCE DAY
Would you like to know what pottery is all about?
Then join me for a ‘taster day’ at my studio near Mildenhall in Suffolk where you will learn about the techniques and try them out for yourself. My aim is to make the day fun and informative with most of the time being taken up with practical tasks, keeping theory to a minimum. A brief summary of topics covered is:
The processes involved in turning raw clay into a finished item.
Types of clay and how they differ from each other
Handling clay and getting it ready for use
Throwing on the potter’s wheel
Turning (trimming) thrown items
How glazes are made and applied, you will try dipping, spraying and painting them on pots
Inspecting various type of kilns and discussing different firing methods.
The experience day lasts for approximately 7 hours and includes tea, coffee and a light lunch. All materials and tools that you will need for the day will be provided. Pottery can be a messy business and I advise that you wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty or bring an apron.
I run the day for one or two people and the cost is £165 per person.
THROWING AND GLAZING COURSE
Would you like to improve your throwing and glazing techniques?
I offer a 9 hour course of lessons split over 3 days.
You will learn to throw on the wheel for the first 3 hours. The second 3 hours will be spent in turning (making good) the work you have thrown.
This work will have its first bisque firing and the last 3 hours of the course will be spent in glazing this work.
The work will have its final glaze firing and then it can be collected at a mutually convenient time.
The cost of this course is £300 per person.
Tea and coffee will be available if required!
HOURLY TEACHING
This tuition is mainly for people who have prior experience and want to concentrate on improving certain aspects of their technique.
It can also be useful for people who have completed one of the other courses and want to learn more.
I charge £35 per hour per person and normally only have one student at a time so I can offer dedicated tuition.
Tea and coffee will be available if required!
